Time to write
At the Château de Lavigny, we know that, more than anything, time is what writers need. Thanks to the generous initiative of our founder Jane Ledig-Rowohlt, over the past 20 years we have been able to offer that rare gift to more than 500 poets, novelists and writers, working in all forms and genres. Work produced at the Chateau de Lavigny has enriched the world of international writing, as well as highlighting the role Switzerland plays as a centre of creativity and literature.
Heinrich Maria and Jane Ledig-Rowohlt Foundation and Its Mission
The Château de Lavigny International Writers’ Residence was founded by the late Jane Rowohlt in memory of her husband, the German publisher, Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt (Rowohlt Verlag). Her wish was to bequeath their home, the Château de Lavigny, for a writers’ residence offering and fostering “a spirit of international community and creativity.”
While Ledig-Rowohlt published Albert Camus, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Günther Grass, Vladimir Nabokov, John Updike, Harold Pinter, Jean-Paul Sartre, and many other key twentieth century writers, he always looked for new voices. In that spirit, the Foundation encourages emerging writers as well as established ones to apply. It looks for writers interested in exchanging their ideas as well as concentrating on their own work.
Since the creation of the foundation in 1996, the Château de Lavigny has welcomed some 500 writers.

Du Temps pour écrire
Au château de Lavigny, nous savons que, plus qu'autre chose, ce dont un écrivain a besoin, c'est de temps. Au cours des vingt-cinq dernières années, grâce à la généreuse impulsion donnée par notre fondatrice Jane Ledig-Rowohlt, nous avons été en mesure d'offrir ce bien si précieux à de nombreux poètes, romanciers, essayistes, traducteurs, de tous horizons et de tous genres, pour que leur travail enrichisse le monde de la littérature internationale, avec, pour un temps, la Suisse en son coeur.
L’esprit de la Fondation Heinrich Maria et Jane Ledig-Rowohlt
La résidence internationale pour écrivains et traducteurs du Château de Lavigny a été fondée par Jane Rowohlt en mémoire de son époux, l’éditeur allemand Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt (Rowohlt Verlag). Son vœu était de faire de leur domicile, le Château de Lavigny, une résidence pour écrivains désireux de partager « un esprit de communauté internationale propice à la création ».
Ledig-Rowohlt, qui publiait Albert Camus, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Günther Grass, Vladimir Nabokov, John Updike, Harold Pinter, Jean-Paul Sartre et bien d’autres grands écrivains du XXème siècle, cherchait inlassablement de nouvelles voix. La Fondation, fidèle à cet esprit, soutient aussi bien les jeunes auteurs que ceux déjà reconnus. Elle souhaite favoriser ceux qui désirent échanger des idées tout en travaillant à leur œuvre propre.
Depuis sa création en 1996, le Château de Lavigny a accueilli quelques 600 écrivains.
